Derinkuyu Underground City and Ihlara Valley are our first stops on our Cappadocia tour.
The famous Derinkuyu Underground City is the largest and deepest underground city in Cappadocia. Built 85 meters below ground, this underground city showcases many architectural symbols from ancient times. The site has been open to visitors since 1969 and is becoming increasingly well-known. The city was home to 20,000 people and had at least 18 levels. Derinkuyu closely resembles modern city structures, with mosques, schools, factories, stables, and living quarters. It is also reported to have had a very complex system , including at least 15,000 ventilation shafts and a system providing clean water to everyone. Our second stop on our Cappadocia trip is the Ihlara Valley. The valley is 14 km (8.7 miles) long and features a very significant rock formation that can only be seen in Cappadocia. Ihlara Valley is also known as one of the first areas settled by Christians. Therefore, you will understand why so many churches were built along the valley. We will walk approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) parallel to the magnificent Melendiz River and see many of nature's creations, from vineyards to extraordinary birds and butterflies. Here, we will have a delicious lunch at a local restaurant just across the river and enjoy the surroundings. Finally, on our Derinkuyu Underground City and Ihlara Valley Cappadocia Tour, we will visit the Selimiye Monastery. The largest structure in Cappadocia, it served a religious purpose dating back to the 13th century. Due to its large size and extraordinary design, the Monastery is considered one of the must-see places in Cappadocia. There is also a cathedral inside the Monastery and incredible paintings on its walls. There are also plenty of storage rooms, stables and a school. After our visit to Selimiye Monastery, we will join our Derinkuyu Underground City and Ihlara Valley Cappadocia day trip and drop you back to your hotel. Additional Information We recommend participants bring comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and a camera.
