The Turkish sage Evliya Çelebi noted the magnificence of Sapanca : "Lake Sapanca is 24 miles long. There are seventy-six villages in four years. The faces of all the people are red because they drink from the water of this lake. The crops and gardens are large. The soil is fertile. The melons and watermelons grown in this period can be carried by a donkey from afar. In this lake, people from the villages have eighty pieces of boats and broken boats, taking timber and... The villagers catch seventy or eighty kinds of fish in this lake and profit. Freshwater fish such as trout, carp, and pike are very delicious. The depth of the lake is twenty strokes in most places, and its water is pure and clear."
